The Massachusetts Division of Capital and Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) has awarded DOC the SSU Mainstage Theater project. The plans call for a complete gutting of the existing facility and rebuilding the theater as part of the Sophia Gordon Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The $17.6 million project creates a more intimate theater, raised seating, balcony, orchestra pit, and a mainstage floor with hydraulic lift. The smaller theater allows room for a full-sized rehearsal stage, a larger glass-walled lobby, a box office, shop rooms and offices. Work on this project is scheduled for completion Spring 2016 and is aiming for LEED Silver certification. Due to the tight site on a busy main road, site logistics is a particular challenge on this project. Additionally the telecom room for the entire campus is housed in the basement of the building. Uninterrupted power and access to this room must be maintained at all times.
