Biosolids Heat Drying Facility

O’Connell subsidiary, NEFCO, was awarded a contract for permitting, design, and construction of this new Biosolids Processing Facility located in Cumberland, Maryland.  NEFCO was also awarded a 15 year operating contract with the City of Cumberland. DOC’s construction management services included schedule monitoring, cost estimating, and construction guidance. With a design capacity in excess of 11 dry tons per day, the facility receives digested sludge from an adjacent wastewater treatment plant. The new processing facility has a high-solids centrifuge and a single dryer process train that utilizes a direct-fired, rotary drum drying system. Dryer exhaust is treated by scrubbing, condensing, recirculation and thermal oxidation. The pelletized biosolids product from the Cumberland facility will be sold for use as a renewable ingredient in specialty fertilizer blends.
