MIT Simmons Hall

MIT Simmons Hall
Quite simply, there is nothing else in the world like this building. The innovative residence facility is open to the students, faculty, and artists-in-residence who live, work, eat, and study within its welcoming spaces. Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Steven Holl, this facility not only breaks new ground using innovative construction methods and technology developed by DOC, but it required a fast-track schedule to guarantee completion for Fall 2002 occupancy. The building includes myriad one-of-a-kind systems and details, including the amazing grid exterior that holds 6,000 windows. Five irregular vertical openings pass through the building bringing natural light from above, and acting like lungs to provide fresh air throughout the building. This project has received a Build Massachusetts award, the AIA Honor Award, and was the June 2003 cover story of Architectural Record.
